Oral Examination

The dentist will provide an age appropriate exam. This includes visually evaluating the teeth, gums and mouth for disease as well as evaluating for any orthodontic concerns that may need attention from an orthodontist. We treat children exclusively and have numerous techniques for making the dental visit as enjoyable as possible.

X-Rays

X-rays are necessary for the dentist to diagnose cavities that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Decay is often developing between teeth that are touching and cannot be detected visually. By the time the cavity is seen visually it is usually very extensive. Decay that has progressed can cause pain, infection and be more difficult to treat. As a dental office that only treats children, we have smaller X-ray sensors that are more comfortable in a child's mouth.

First Visit

The Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends that a child see the dentist when they get their first tooth or by their first birthday. This is important to help your child get comfortable with coming to the dentist at an early age for easy and uneventful visits. The dentist will also discuss brushing, nursing, diet, bottle use, pacifier use, thumb sucking and answer any questions you may have about your child’s oral health. By discussing and reinforcing good dental habits early on we can increase their chance of being cavity free.

Cavity Fillings

Fillings are materials that replace tooth structure that is lost from decay (cavities).

Stainless Steel Crowns / Caps

When decay is extensive or a large amount of tooth structure is lost, a crown or cap may be the best treatment for your child. Crowns cover all surfaces of the tooth and prevent further decay and breakdown.

Baby Root Canals

When decay and bacteria are deep and enter into the nerve a child may experience pain. A baby root canal or “pulpotomy” is often used to remove infected tissue and resolve pain. A crown is then placed over the tooth to help prevent bacteria from re-infecting the tooth.

Extractions

Baby teeth sometimes need extractions when decay is too extensive and the dentist cannot save the tooth. This is usually a simple procedure and much easier than an adult tooth extraction. Extractions are also sometimes recommended to alleviate crowding or improve alignment of the teeth.

Space Maintainers

Baby teeth help a child chew and speak but also guide the permanent tooth into the proper place. When baby teeth are extracted early, a space maintainer is sometimes recommended to help the permanent tooth erupt in the correct position.

Cleanings

Your child will receive an age appropriate cleaning. If it is your child’s first time to the dentist or they are anxious, we may spend extra time letting your child get used to the dentist and assistants and having someone new brush their teeth. We will show them all the instruments and answer any questions they may have about their dental visit.

Fluoride

Fluoride has been proven to be one of many factors in helping prevent cavities. Your dentist will discuss with you your child’s risk of dental decay and develop an effective fluoride regimen that you are comfortable with.

Sealants

Sealants are thin protective resins painted on the chewing surfaces of the teeth to prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped in the deep grooves that can be hard to keep clean. Sealants are a great way to help prevent cavities.

Oral Hygiene Instructions

During your child’s visit the dentist we will discuss proper brushing and flossing technique. We will identify any areas that your child needs to work on with brushing and flossing and let them know if mom or dad still needs to help.

Nutrition Guidance

Diet is an important factor in cavity prevention. We will discuss dietary habits, any special dietary restrictions and come up with a plan to help you and your child make more dentally conscious choices.

Oral Habits

Pediatric dentists recommend children stop using a pacifier or sucking their thumb by age 3 to reduce (but not prevent) the likelihood that your child will need braces down the road. We will discuss ways to help make that transition as easy as possible.

Bridges

If you’re missing one or more teeth, it can affect your ability to speak or eat, and your remaining natural teeth could begin to shift position. A dental bridge provides a functional replacement for missing teeth. A bridge will restore the appearance and function of your teeth, and it will stabilize your remaining teeth to prevent them from shifting position. Bridges are made up of one or more artificial replacement teeth that are affixed to your natural teeth on either side of the gap left by the missing teeth.
